How to choose the best LED strip for lighting

Published : 01/24/2023 09:30:00

LED strips represent the most used solution to ensure reliable and design home lighting. The ability to innovate and the incredible practicality are just some of the characteristics of this product, the LED strips are in fact applied to different contexts: offices, shops, convention centers, laboratories and wherever a customized lighting project is required. High efficiency, reliability, long life and low energy consumption are in fact the main advantages in using this product.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT LED STRIP

The perfect LED strip does not exist, but there is the LED strip that best lends itself to the characteristics required in the design phase of lighting project. First of all, however, it is essential to clarify some values with which the performance of a lighting body is measured and which must be taken into consideration upstream of each lighting project: brightness, CCT, RGB, CRI are some of these parameters ...

The concept of brightness, expressed in lumens, measures the luminous flux emitted by the source; in other words the greater the lumens, the greater the intensity of the light emitted.

The CCT (Color Changing Temperature) is a technology of LED lights only and instead indicates the color temperature measured and is expressed in degrees Kelvin; it is a value that directly affects the appearance of white light going from warm white to cool white. More specifically:

  • <2700°K: very warm white color, suitable for the catering and hotel sectors;
  • 3000°K: warm white color, suitable if you want to create a relaxing atmosphere;
  • 4000°K: cold white color, indicated in contexts where concentration is required;
  • >6500°K: very cold white color that therefore enhances every detail.

Finally with the acronym CRI (Color Rendering Index) you measure how you see colors under an LED light source compared to sunlight. In this case the values are included within a scale ranging from 0 to 100 where a higher number corresponds to a better quality of color rendering of light.

Power supplies for LED strips and IP protection

After evaluating the factors seen in the previous paragraphs, it is necessary to focus on the power required by the LED strip , i.e. the amount of energy required by the lighting project. At this moment the choice of the right power supply comes into play which will be selected based on the length and type of LED strip. Another parameter to consider in this sense is represented by the input of the LED strip (12V, 24V or 48V), which must match the associated LED driver; a wrong voltage input could in fact cause malfunctions and safety risks for the entire project.

From the point of view of energy optimization , it is useful not to take full advantage of the maximum power of the power supply to ensure its longevity and avoid overheating (see in-depth information on CLO technology). By dividing the power of the LED strip by 80%, we obtain the minimum Watts required that the perfect power supply must have.

The degree of safety and protection of the LED strips is finally ascertained by the IP degree and the relative certificates, making the LED strips perfectly applicable even in outdoor or difficult to install contexts.

Thanks to the wide range of LED strips and silicone neon flex it is possible to develop ad hoc projects, following special requests and needs. Discover the best solution for your application.
