LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a component that emits monocromatic light when direct electric current passes through it. The LED represents an evolution of lithting because the light is obtained from a semiconductor and through a fiber.

LED is an optoelectronic device that uses the optical property of semiconductor to produce photon. Thus, to function, the LED uses the bases of photons, which in turn, through a negative-positive junction are made using the optical property of the semiconductor.

The unit of measurement for LEDs is Lux (LX) which measures the light projected on the objects.

What are COB LEDs?

COB LEDs, which stand for LED Chip On Board, are single LED chips joined together within a single module; generally within each COB chip, we can find from 9 or more diodes.

An important fact that characterizes this technology is the luminous efficiency which in this case is usually between 70 lumens per watt up to 100 lumens per watt.

Which are the advantages of COB LEDs?

COB LEDs are characterized by a single circuit with two contacts for the entire chip; the main consequence is, therefore, the simplicity of realization of the entire module. The reduction of necessary components, together with the elimination of the standard case also have a significant impact on the reduction of heat generated by the chip; this is, in fact, one of the main problems of this technology, overcome by the coupled with the right heat sink, able to transmit heat actively or passively and reducing the overall operating temperature of the entire group.

The operation of a LED lighting system is intrinsically linked to the operating temperature. A LED device is never 100% efficient: about half of its power is dissipated as heat, from which derive the efficiency of 40 or 50%.

A poorly managed temperature of the LED lighting system is often the first cause of failures and malfunctions: although the limit is generally high, excessive heat can cause deterioration in brightness, color shifting, or reduced lifetime of individual LED chips.

Usually made of aluminum, the LED heat sinks are an important device for regulating the temperature of LED components within tolerable limits, to avoid overheating that could cause various types of damage.
